About Us

Influenced by the West Coast's natural beauty, Light and Dwell was built with an emphasis on quality over quantity and creating spaces that are both innovative and timeless while remaining whole-heartedly home. The brand was founded in Oregon in 2015 and was named by Architectural Digest as a New American Voice.

Light and Dwell has a design ethos of old-age European culture and the signature L&D aesthetic is highly influenced by that elevated ease and warm refinement. Our founder, Aymee Kuhlman, shapes the heart of Light & Dwell fostering thoughtful business and client relationships while driving our commitment to exceptional design.

Design Principal, Katherine Cunningham brings 15 years of design experience that’s client-focused and design-forward.

As a leader in interiors, we are committed to sustainability in our designs. Our design initiative ensures sustainability by incorporating well-loved vintage pieces along with bespoke and custom-made products by artisanal makers. Each design element tells a story and gives the allure that these heirlooms have been passed down from generation to generation. This also ensures that each of our clients has one-of-a-kind homes.

Founder and CEO

Aymee Kuhlman.

Aymee believes great design is about more than just aesthetics—it’s about understanding people and creating spaces that truly reflect their lives. As a designer-led, client-focused professional, she listens deeply, ensuring each project is a seamless blend of artistic vision and thoughtful functionality. With a background in education and entrepreneurship, Aymee brings both creativity and strategic expertise to every space, transforming homes into places of beauty, connection, and ease.

Her journey has taken her across the globe, from living in Australia and New Zealand to exploring far and wide, enriching her design perspective with diverse influences. Raised on a sheep farm in Oregon, Aymee developed an early appreciation for history and craftsmanship, inspired by her Grandma Charlotte’s vast antique collection.

Now, nearly a decade into her design career, Aymee is as passionate as ever about growth and innovation. She and her husband, Jim, are embracing the “empty nest” stage, cherishing time with their three adult children. When she’s not designing, you’ll find her hosting a lively gathering, listening to audiobooks on the go, or indulging in her love of baking—always with a cup of coffee in hand.

Principal Designer

Katherine Cunningham.

But honestly? Just call her Katie—everyone else does.

For the past 15 years, Katie has been designing her way across the West Coast alongside her mom, Julie, transforming houses into homes. Now splitting her time between Oregon and California, she’s mastered the art of blending inspiration from two distinctly different regions. Her design mantra? Never repeat the same thing twice and always make it personal—because cookie-cutter belongs in the kitchen, not your home.

Katie studied Interior Design and Business, giving her the ability to balance the dreamy with the doable. From beachfront homes to mountain retreats, she’s designed it all, proving that great design knows no boundaries—or zip codes. She’s built her career on strong client relationships and repeat business, earning a reputation for truly listening to her clients and transforming their vision into something even more beautiful than they imagined. In recent years, she has also dedicated herself to curating vintage pieces from around the world, bringing history, character, and a sense of story into every space she designs.

When she’s not designing, Katie is happiest surrounded by good food, great company, and a home that feels lived in and loved. A dedicated foodie and enthusiastic host, she believes the best moments happen around the table. She’s also a mom to two spirited girls—one biological, one adopted, both bossy. Her quick wit ensures there’s never a dull moment, whether on a project or at the dinner table.

At the end of the day, Katie’s mission is simple: to create homes that tell your story—not hers (though she’s more than happy to help you tell it better).
