Area Rugs: Low to High
Today we’re talking about one of the most essential items in your home, rugs! When we design a space we often start by choosing the rug first, we like to use it as the foundation for the overall look and feel of the space. Rugs can bring warmth, color and texture into the room, bringing the whole space together and defining the space. We choose rugs of all different shades, textures, patterns, and prices and we know how hard it can be to choose the perfect rug that stays within our clients budget. When we share photos of our projects, the question we get asked the most is for the rug source and recommendations on what size they should purchase. So we’re here to share some of our favorite rugs, for all budgets, and tips for what size rug you need for your space!
Typical sizes we use for living room rugs are 8x10, 9x12, 10x14.
Make sure the front legs of the furniture are on the rug, never leave a rug floating in the middle of the room. However you don’t want to rug to be too big, try to leave at least 18 inches between the rug and the wall.
Typical rug size for a queen bed is 8x10.
Typical rug size for a king bed is a 9x12.
Leave at least 8 inches of open space between the rug and the night stands.
Use a rug pad! Not only does it cushion the rug but it also helps keep the rug in place, and extend the life of the rug. This is one of our go-to rug pads.
You can absolutely layer an area rug over carpet if you have a low pile carpet. We love doing this in bedrooms!
One trick we love is layering a smaller vintage rug over a larger jute or neutral rug, this adds texture and interest and extends the rug size if the vintage rug is smaller then we need.
