Modern Traditional Decor

Modern Traditional can seem a bit like a contradiction, but when done right it should evoke a feeling of gathering, friendly, warm and inviting with a balance of modern touches and traditional elements. Incorporating shaker style cabinets in the kitchen, furniture with clean lines and materials like natural wood, marble, and plaster. We know it can be a confusing style to navigate so here are some tips for designing your Modern Traditional space:

  • Start with a neutral color space and layer texture and color in the decor.

  • Mix modern and vintage decor pieces. Style vintage accessories like a large handmade ceramic vase or vintage artwork on a furniture piece with clean natural, and minimal lines. Or vice versa, if you have an heirloom vintage hutch, style it with neutral toned accessories or decor pieces with architectural lines. Another way to mix and match is to pair vintage artwork with modern lighting.

  • Modern Traditional is warm and inviting, add richly patterned pillows and textiles to your sofa and drape a cozy throw over the back.

  • Bring in touches of nature with a faux or real tree, or large stems in a vase, styled on a coffee table.

  • For artwork, choose pieces like vintage paintings and frame them in a slim modern frame. We love these framed vintage tea towels!

  • Add wall details like shiplap or tongue and groove paneling to give the space texture.
