The Right Way to Mix Patterns (and a couple of wrong ways)

Mixing patterns is one of our favorite ways to bring that “lived-in” look to a home. However, mixing patterns can sometimes be a hit or miss depending on how you it’s executed. Today we are breaking it down step by step to take the intimidation out of this “design secret”.

  1. Keep it neutral or within your color palette. We love to get inspiration from floral arrangements, this makes it easy to stay within a color palette when mixing patterns

  2. We like to use smaller patterns rather than big bold ones. Subtle patterns in textiles work great together.

  3. Don’t forget to add in solids! Whether it’s a solid pillow, or a furniture piece make sure you mix in a good amount of “solid” so that the patterns aren’t overwhelming.

  4. Mix & Match. We like to mix our patterns. We wouldn’t use all striped pillows on a sofa, or all floral patterned pillows. We like to mix the patterns up. If you use two different striped pillows, make sure the stripes are going the opposite direction.

  5. Hard Finishes. Hard finish patterns don’t get enough credit! You can mix up patterns with hard finishes. See an example below!
