Our Favorite Upholstery Trends of 2021

One of the exciting trends we are starting to see in 2021 is the return to vintage. We are outlining our favorite upholstery trends below and you may notice that a lot of these look quite familiar. I believe that the most telling sign if something is here to stay or not, is to take a look at how it has adapted through history. All of the materials we’ve listed below have had repeated moments in interior history and we love that there are still unique and innovative ways to bring them new life.

Boucle & Sherpa

Both Bouclé & Sherpa are having major moments in interiors right now. Or should we say a major “return” - the style has been hugely popular at different times through recent history and we love that it’s making a re-appearance in 2021. Often found in shades of creams & whites, the style brings warmth to rustic styles and pairs great with warm wood tones. Instantly adds texture to a space, go big with a furniture statement piece or subtle textile accent with a throw pillow or blanket. The fabric does run higher in price but the durability and timeless-ness of the style makes for a worthy investment.

Leather

Leather has been a mainstay in interiors for a while now and with good reason. It’s durability against tears, spills, and sun exposure is unmatched. The instant ambience it creates in a space is another unique to leather quality. We like to use leather in accents such as an ottoman, accent chair and through accessories such as coasters. We suggest balancing out the boldness of leather with a wool rug and brass hardware.

Velvet

If there’s one textile that is guaranteed to bring elegance to a space, it’s velvet. Although it has a luxurious reputation, it is also one of the most durable and versatile fabrics. It is very forgiving with spills, which makes it perfect for a kid-friendly homes and is great for camouflaging pet hair. All while being both comfortable and stylish. Pair with other textures such as linen or wool, for a great contrast.

Heavy Patterns

This trend might be a a bit controversial, but we are huge fans here at Light & Dwell! There are so many unique ways to use heavy patterns in your home. Whether you opt to mix and match with other prints (see more tips here) or include it more subtly through a lamp or pillow accent. It can bring classic americana to your home or an english countryside aesthetic depending on your styling. See our favorite picks below.

Seagrass or Woven Materials

One of the founding inspirations here at Light & Dwell is natural elements. We are huge proponents of bringing the outside in and are excited to see that this style is trending in 2021. We believe when you use nature as your inspiration, the design is guaranteed to be timeless. Rattan, Seagrass, and wicker are our go - to textiles to achieve this organic look.
