Our Guide to Lighting

Lighting is one of, if not the most important thing we think about when designing. Lighting has a huge influence on what feelings a room evokes. Thinking through the intention behind each light source is another way we elevate the design to become more personal to the homeowners. With that being said, there are a couple tried and true “rules” to follow when installing lighting in your home. We are breaking a few of those down below.

Pendants

Depending on the size of your island, we recommend pairing either 2 or 3 pendants.

2 pendants: When using in a kitchen space, pendants should be at least 30” from the center of the island and at least 6” from the ends of the island.

3 pendants: Center the middle pendant. Then remaining pendants should be 30” - 32” apart from each other and at least 6” from the ends of the island.

Pendants should be 30” - 32” above the countertops or table.

Chandeliers

Above a dining table: 33” - 34” above the table top. Hang extra 3” higher for each additional foot of ceiling. At least 6” from the edges of table.

In a living room or bedroom: Hang in the center of the room. Hang so the bottom of the fixture is at least 7’ high off the ground.

Sconces Part 1

Beside a mirror: Pairing 2 sconces, Center to the mirror and install 4'“ - 6” away from mirror

Above a mirror or piece of art: Hang the sconce 4” - 6” above the mirror or art piece.

Sconces Part 2

Beside the bed: Hang so that the light shade is lined up with the edge of the bed and is higher than the back of the bed.

Above floating shelves: Hang 12”-18” above floating shelves. Keep in mind what you will be storing on your shelf when determining height.

Bonus!

Think about your favorite spaces in your home and how you could include lighting that is personal to you. Have a favorite reading nook? Include a sconce! Laundry room feeling dim? Install a statement pendant!
