Holiday Decor Do’s & Don’ts

I recently shared all of our holiday do’s and don’ts for the season over on Instagram and thought these tips needed a spot on the journal as well.. Trigger warning, if you are easily offended you should probably bop off now (only teasing, this is all in good fun). In this write up I simply break down how to achieve the Light and Dwell, elevated holiday season aesthetic. I’ll start off with the five things we suggest you avoid. First item being faux anything, no faux trees, wreaths or garland. We also prefer warm white lights over colored. This goes for both the interior and exterior of the home. Next up, avoid any and all holiday signs, especially ones that say something along the lines of “Ho Ho Ho”. We also feel strongly about avoiding themes like glam or farmhouse.. to ensure you don’t end up in one of these decor traps, just avoid Hobby Lobby all together. And lastly, unpopular opinion but absolutely no poinsettias. Scroll below for our list of decor do’s!

Again, this is all in good fun and I hope you decorate and celebrate the holiday in whatever way makes you happy!

1: a real tree always (unless you’re allergic, of course)

This advice goes for wreaths and garland as well. Try to avoid anything faux! The real deal just looks and smells so wonderful.

2: stick with warm white lights

Avoid colored lights on the exterior of the home as well as the interior, white looks much more elevated and timeless. If you are craving some color, ornaments and ribbon are a great way to add it in this season.

3: source vintage glass ornaments and decorative items

You can usually find these at local antique shops and markets during the holidays. Vintage ornaments feel so nostalgic and patina beautifully over time. Items such as candlestick holders are especially great because you can use them at different times of the year as well.

4: wrap with natural materials

Wrapping with craft paper is great because you can use it for other holidays as well. I also love monochromatic wrapping; burgundy or forest green paper with a matching velvet ribbon is really beautiful.

5: stick to a classic color palette

Whether its your classic red and green or rich warm tones, just be sure to stay consistent throughout your home. This makes it so much easier to collect items you love over the years.
